update utility
the teenage engineering update utility is used to keep your teenage engineering devices up to date with the latest firmware releases. it is a quick and easy way to make sure your compatible devices are working optimally and have the latest functionality and stability.
the update utility uses web midi so it requires a compatible browser. we test in chrome and brave. other browsers that support web midi might work.
all current devices with a usb-c connection can be used with the update utility. updates and update instruction for other devices can be found in the downloads section.
how to update
follow the steps below to use the update utility:
- visit the update utility web app with a computer and a web midi compatible browser.
the first time you load the page, make sure to allow web midi:
- connect the unit that you want to update to your computer using usb, and power it on. your unit will be auto detected, and its serial number, current operating system version, and sku (product code) will be displayed.
- if an update is available press the update button to start the update process.
note: do not disconnect from usb or power off the unit while updating!
- the unit will be ready to use after the update is complete.
troubleshooting - windows
recently, windows rolled out an update that affected how webmidi works, but no worries!
you can install the dedicated asio drivers for teenage engineering products, available here: https://teenage.engineering/downloads/usb-asio
also, you should disable windows runtime midi in the settings. to do so:
- open chrome://flags/ using the chrome browser.
- search for 'midi' and choose to disable 'use windows runtime midi api'.
- restart the browser.
- now visit https://teenage.engineering/apps/update again.
if no device shows up, try to reload the page.
- minimize the number of other midi devices connected to the same computer. they might interfere with web midi.
- if after multiple retries to connect nothing shows up at all, web midi on windows might have given up trying to connect. to solve this restart the browser.
- windows installs device drivers per port. if rapidly connected and disconnected too many times, web midi may have given up on the port. use a different usb port or restart the browser.
troubleshooting - mac
there can be a number of reasons as to why an update fails. something so simple as just trying again can do the trick. if updating fails, here are a few tips to try:
- if no device shows up, try to reload the page.
- allow usb accessory.
if this message comes up for you then click allow: - keep the active browser tab open.
on some computers it is required to keep the active browser tab in focus as background processing may cause the update to fail. try again with the tab open.
- further investigation.
